I keep looking for a dodgy looking character reading a newspaper, but he's nowhere to be seen :(

Lovely video as ever Richard

Cheers

Mike

Ha! The dodgy geezer is carefully wrapped up. There is some more work to be done on the platforms and buildings and we didn't want to run the risk of damaging him. Rest assured he will have pride of place outside the station building on the island platform where he can be seen in all his splendour:)

For information, Mike gave me a super painted figure when he came to visit Heyside - a lovely thought that is much appreciated.

Hi

We had our November running session last week, and here's a little video.

I really must get more organised, as I only think to take videos part way through the evening..... and I must hoover some of the stock first:)

Cheers

Richard
I love the video, Richard.

Not sure about the livery of the Fowler 2-6-2T tho'. Shouldn't it be weathered?;)

We need a whole hour long unedited version of Heyside action to watch during the 1am night feeds..!

JB.

When we get the buildings we are working on nearer being finished (so I have more views), and I get my act together, I must be able to get a 20 minute video together from a running night without much repetition. I'll see if I can oblige early next year.

Hi

It's a Heyside Wednesday today, and I have been remiss in letting you know what we've been doing....so I shall poke my camera into everybody's work as the day goes on.

First off, Roger has been building the stair tower for the mill that is at the back of the minerals yard. The 4th wall is about to go on, so I got this record shot of the stairs while I could.

He's now about to start embossing the Depron for the stonework.

Lunch now, more later.

Meanwhile, back at t'mill, I have pretty much finished one of the sides - it just needs a bit of further weathering. It has been glazed and the windows are courtesy of Phil. In fact the windows, and how to accurately get the hundreds (literally) I need has been the biggest headache for me over the last year or so since we embarked on the major rebuild.

I have been working on a second side - there are two separate buildings for the mill - which is now ready for the glazing. It is shown here perched against the mill front. It is going to be an imposing building when finished.

Richard, that certainly is a very imposing building.

I noticed on the cottage rooves that the first row of slates are kinda of hanging in mid air. I'm reasonably sure that proto typical practice was to lay the first row at 90 degrees and then lay normally over the top. It gives some strength and support but also creates the right angle.

Stunning work though nevertheless. I'm in awe at the scale of Heyside. Which reminds me I promised you that I'd get the Hat & Feathers sorted. :)

Richard.
Nice job on the mill the stairs are impressive I am a building man myself as you would know, most of the structures on the BRHRR I have had to build myself.
I think I am going to enjoy this forum so much to see so many questions will I ever get back to my scrap yard!
I'm laughing always a good sign.
Thanks.
Neville.

Hi

Heyside running session tonight, and Clive brought along his latest loco which will form part of the Heyside roster - an MOK Ivatt 4, the 3rd to be completed after Tony's two.

I make no apologies for inflicting some lococentric photos on you. This is a truly outstanding build in every respect, one of the best I've seen.

While I had my camera out, Roger suggested this bird's eye rooftop photo.

I took some video as well, including the Crosti 9F but that will have to wait until I have processed it.

Going back to page 58 and those wonderful photos of the goods yard I have a question.
When you snapped the photos what did you use for the backdrop beyond the model wall.
I am having trouble taking photos of my '"scrap yard " layout as there is no backdrop and the photos just don't look right with life size benches and tool cabinets in the background.
I've thought about getting a sheet of 3mm MDF and painting it blue.

Hi Neville,

I'm with you on that - I dislike room clutter in photographs.

With Heyside I cheat as much as possible, choosing camera angles that as far as possible have the buildings behind them. Where more of the room is shown, I process out the clutter where practicable using Irfanview. Photoshop would do better, but I have not mastered that. The room in which Heyside lives is painted a very light cream/yellow colour, which seems to suit Heyside's urban feel with its palette of browns, so I normally just eliminate the clutter by cloning the wall colour, which avoids blocks of obviously added in colours. The two photos below will show what I mean.

In your last photo of the sidings Richard, the running surface of all the visible rail appears to be well-weathered representing a rusty surface. Have you used chemical blackening only, or is the top painted on the basis that no electrical contact is necessary in these areas, or is there a secret to achieving both rusty finish and conductivity?

Hi Tony

They were chemically blackened a while ago, and cleaned using rag and isopropanol. The electrical conductivity has to be maintained as the yard is shunted, so no paint. I suspect also that the angle of the photo makes the rail head appear duller than it really is.
