Hi Graham,

I don't think so, I'm even tempted to do the same with mine - it's a Ron Chaplin gearbox and Canon motor - then it's a question of what to get to put it in - a Black 5 - 4762 - in Malacite Green perhaps

Hi Mike,
Not bothered about what it goes in , it just seems such a waste ?40 worth of motor and gearbox just doing nothing.  I should have had the one out of the Finney Bulldog at the same time.  My deceased friend was a chap who flitted from hobby to hobby buying all the gear he needed ( all top quality). He would then do said hobby for a while give up and dump the gear in the shed. There was Model Aircraft, Model ships, wargaming, fishing, watercolour painting, model engineering, model railways, guitar making, photography and calligraphy stuff in there all partly used. Plus piles of unmade boat kits. Thousands of pounds worth of gear his wife knew nothing about.
What I want to know is, how did he get away with it for so long?.

The thing that puts me off a Bullied is that clasp brake gear. One day I shall have to bit the bullet as I would like to scratch build one.....

Graham,

just noticed this in one of your earlier replys - David Andrews includes a little jig for the brakes and they went together no problem.

thanks for the comments.

At last, some progress to report. I decided to complete the chassis before going any further with the body and also decided to paint the chassis before putting the vavle gear on - hence the delay. Well, the painting went ok, used Halfords Acid 8 primer for the first time, most impressed, don't know if it can be used on resin though, ahs anybody tried it? Used Halfords satin black over the primer. Put everything back together, and very slowly, made my way from front to back as it were, both sides at the same time with the valve gear. All went well apart from the drop links, which are a double folded piece of etch which is extremely vunerable - should be a lost wax casting in my opinion, especially as I snapped both in the process of adjusting the anchor link/combination lever, thankfully, David included a spare for each side on the etch. That apart, all worked first time with hand power, so a little oil was applied the power hooked up with the chassis 'on the blocks' and bingo :D :D :D

A couple of little bits to go on tomorrow and that will complete the chassis and back to the body on Thursday - Wednesday I'm otherweise engaged.

Hi Ian,

this one is going to sit on a shelf - in a display cabinet - when it's finished.

I meant still sitting in a box unopened waiting for me to get the skills required to build it or passing it on as an heirloom

It's already been sat on the shelf for nearly two years, but it is going to a good home.

I'm following this as I 'm doing one for a customer.  He has the kit and I'm waiting now for it to be delivered. What do you think of a kit that is so designed that once you put the cab interior in, you can't get the chassis in and the casting for the backhead does not fit (too wide). Also , on the chassis, you cannot put the designed plunger pick ups on because they are in such a position as to both touch the motor. Oh, and the driving wheels aren't square across the frames. I love kits...........
I'm not referring to Rob's kit in case you are wondering.

Hi Graham,

I've built over a dozen David Andrews kits so far, and I must say, that they go together very well and they produce cracking models at the end of the day. The instructions are also amongst the best around. Having said that, there was a slight problem fitting the body onto the chassis in as much as the instructions in my kit had not been amended to tell you that the rear end of the chassis needed modifying slightly - but generally speaking, no problems. The forming of the cab was an interesting little interlude.

I'm using JPL wheelsets and the 'American pick-up' principle and using a paxolin drawbar between the loco and tender and insulating tape below the tender fall plate and also lined the bogie mudguards to stop any short circuiting.

Also with David's kits, there is the 'all nickel silver' option as well.

I think that building the West Country will be far more enjoyable than your current build.

Hi Mike, I've built three of his without much bother. Two 8F's and a City of Truro. The last 8F has split axles on engine and tender and is very nice runner.
The first one had the American system. That was the one on the cover of the Gazette.
The one I'm struggling with is the Compound. Etches good, came supplied with wheels and motor, details parts - very good. Chassis design poor. In fact I've made my own chassis for it. The boiler is huge piece of brass which has been bored out and has space for the boiler bands machined into it. It is far too heavy. Its difficult enough with 4-4-0's to get any weight in  and this thing is very much nose heavy.  I was going to get one of JM's.
but was told this one was better " more detail". I know one thing though, John's would have gone together better!. I know of another modeller who has struggled with one of these. Still, I mustn't complain too much as I was given it. Once my own kits are finished ( of which I have about 7) I won't be buying anymore. Its back to the scratchbuilding for me......

I went to the North Wales and West Cheshire Group meeting at Llanbedr yesterday and took the West Country or a run-out, even though it is very much still 'work in progress' and thankfully all went very well - always a worrying time when you put your latest build on show for the first run. Will be continuing with fitting the 'fiddly bits' tomorrow.

Hi Rob,

getting there slowly, but getting there.

The Rocket by the way is fully working and from a kit    and the boiler barrel is more or less a sheath around the motor casing.
