Thank you for the clarification Simon. I was not aware that enamel thinners can remove acrylic paint, worth remembering.

I don't think you will get the paint off the cab without requiring a repaint, sometimes it is just easier to strip back and start from scratch - i know, I have had my share of disasters

It ain't easy, believe me.
Don't ask how I know, but it involved being reminded that "sellotape" based boiler bands can dissolve in enamel thinners...

Thanks for all the suggestions, I will get round to reading them properly later tonight.

I am severely hungover today having spent the day in London and drinking cider all day then finishing up with a few cocktails that I can't remember the name of. I ended up on the last train home at 1am with the most uncomfortable seats ever trying to get to sleep. An extremely nice conductor bloke woke me up at Haywards Heath asking if I needed to get off for a connection. I found out this morning one of my friends went to the end of her line and had to spend a fortune to get a cab back at 3am!

I've done that plenty of times too when commuting from Coventry. I can't remember how many times I've been woken up in Birmingham or Wolverhampton and then trying to find a cab to get me home in the early hours. I thought those days were behind me!

Cheers, Steve

Ho ho, you haven't lived until you've fallen asleep on the top of the last 58 service to Sheldon from Union Street Birmingham, before the night services start, and woken up in the Coventry Road bus garage, still drunk, around 3.20am, then been thrown out to await the night service bus anyway........in the pouring rain!

I think I'm finally back to normal. Just.

Yes, as Simon correctly stated I'd like to just remove the rubbish that's been added to leave (hopefully!) a nice standard Heljan 47 in TTGreen. I'll try a few of the methods listed here before I resort to more drastic measures. I'll do some shopping at the weekend. Replacement glazing is a given though, as it looks like it's been melted!

I suppose it won't be too bad if all else fails as I can then add the MMP detail pack and do a nice livery repaint – Colas Rail looks nice.

Haha! Thanks Simon. I was looking for something maybe a little out of the ordinary. I may have a rethink but it's quite nice. It reminds me of the Repsol Honda colours which I like.

I bought some Dettol (couldn't find any Fairy Power Spray) but I'll be damned if I can get the body off. There are a few small black Phillips screws near the bogies but I'm not sure and would rather know than guess. I'll see if I can find an owners/maintenance manual on the interweb somewhere...

Hello Tom, thanks for asking.

Late last week I had it all planned out for today. I was going to use the Dettol trick to see what happened. The problem is I forgot about a birthday party today so didn't have time. I'm still working at the moment so I may see if I can slip it in later tonight.

Before you ask, yes I am writing this at ten to one in the morning – on a Sunday!
Cheers, Steve

Getting around to taking the body off this beast. Can I just pull the lights out of their pockets in the body? What things do I need to be aware of? I can't see a way to remove the cab interiors either. I'm sure this would be all very easy with a service manual but, you've guessed it, I don't have one...

I can't even pull the plugs out of their sockets on the PCB...

Haha, topical, like it!

Took the body off properly today and, holy Moses, it's a state in there. After the heads-up from Phill, I can see that it has been bodged. The LED light ends have been broken off and glued back in place – the ends are still wedged in the body. There are bare wires which look like they've been pinched by the body and hanging on in one case by a single strand! There are a couple screws missing from the roof grills too. I also noticed that on one side the grab handles by the grills are missing but I can probably make these from wire if need be (if they are not included in the Heljan spares packs).

Even though it says so on the box, I just can't bring myself to believe Tower had anything to do with this. Even if they did just the weathering I'd be disappointed.

Tonight I'll finish stripping the body – glazing, grills, etc and start thinking about stripping the paint. I'm hoping that I don't have to take off handrails. I can see the nameplates have been off before as one side is slightly bent only really noticeable looking from above. I guess I'll have to take them off too.

Amazing: there are obviously people out there with too much money, to do things like this to a loco worth nearly £500.

Then there are those of us who would LOVE one.........but have insufficient money.
