Echo exactly what you said alcazar - I'm amazed too! Especially as this seems to be an expensive custom job from Tower - that's a minimum £650!

Luckily (???), as I'm replacing the glazing anyway, I've now found out the glazing has been broken in several places and glued back in. That was a sod to remove! There are still a few bits stuck fast.

A few of these paint removal tricks require submersion in some type of fluid. I'm going to try the Dettol method which STINKS! I need to find a container that's long enough and has a lid. Knowing my luck I'll probably need it more than once...

On the plus side I'm going to take delivery of 23 Graham Farish locos tomorrow. All were part of an unused collection so should be in perfect condition to sell on. The funds would certainly be welcome!

Ha, here I am bitching about the quality of workmanship on this and I've just realised it was a mate of mine. Doh!

Luckily he's not a member of this forum, or any forum as far as I know.

And here she is. I would have uploaded earlier but was stopped in my tracks by the 7 years on documentary about 7/7. Brought back a few memories.

It's in a shocking state which just seems to get worse the more distractions are removed. I honestly don't know how anyone could find this acceptable in any sense of the word. I have have to pop the last 4 windows out then dunk it in a well-earned bath.

Phill, I keep going back to look at your 47, it looks so good! I'm really stuck for livery choices now – I love the dirty 70s look you've got but I'm also a big fan of green. And there's always that Colas Rail niggling away in the back...

Also found your Triang Hymek section – I have one of those to complete so your thread is proving very interesting right now! Cheers

Glad you like my Workbench thread :).........more pics of those loco's on my layout thread ;)

GFYE or BFYE would be the choices for me Steve ;):cool::cool: .....afraid I'm with SimonD on Colas Rail though:shit::D;)

I actually think you could get away with a partial repaint in GFYE by removing the mess round the cabs & retaining the Heljan paint on the bodysides ;)

I would tend to agree with Phill, Steve. Just a tidy up of the fronts etc and cab windows may all that be neccessary:thumbs:. Leaving a nice two-tone green with tops numbers.47 262 (2).jpg

Sorry about the crap photography but as most of the guys on here will say , my photography is'nt very good:rolleyes:

Cheers all. I'll see what's under that mess when I start to strip it. I've found a plastic tub with a lid that's big enough for a loco this size - not as easy as you'd think! Should be arriving today or Monday.

I'll go check what spares are available from Howes as I'll need code panel glazing too. I suspect I'll have to replace the whole units, along with most of the wiring and LEDs. One side of the roof grills need replacing as they have been broken and glued back REALLY badly – see my pic above.

Well, at least this one didn't cost anything, so a small comfort I suppose.

Haha, topical, like it!

Even though it says so on the box, I just can't bring myself to believe Tower had anything to do with this. Even if they did just the weathering I'd be disappointed.

I bought a Tower 47 weathered ltd edn 47 off eBay a year ago. The weathering was quite simply brown and black spray paint. The Tower repaints on HJ locos is poor because their preparation is non existent. They clearly never strip or sand back the original paint lines. If you look at some of the pics on their site you can see the original HJ two-tone green paint lines showing through. Thankfully it can be sorted. I'd be interested to know how you get on with the Dettol and Fairy. If the domestic products are unsuccessful I found the Precision paints stripper worked a treat.

Cheers

It's not the ducks I'm worried about, it's the neighbours selling tickets outside my window which concerns me – they're only giving me a 5% commission!

Thanks Tom, that's good to know. The results, good or bad will be exclusively right here!

Reminds me of FULL SIZE locos at Crewe works in the early 70's: pre-TOPS numbers painted over and old liveries ditto.
Runs, sags dust and hairs and fingerprints in the paintwork.

Doncaster would have been ashamed to let locos out looking like that...

Maybe I should give them more credit for being so realistic... :D

My stripping tub arrived this morning. £10 from a plastics supplier. Could come in handy and is big enough for any loco that happens to be suckered up by the fool that is me!

HELP! I'm drowni... glug, glug, glug...

IMG_1229.JPG

There's 3 bottles of Dettol in there! I had to top off with water, which is why it's cloudy. I estimate a 50/50 ratio of Dettol to water, which will take longer to strip but is cheaper at the checkout.

I'll have a quick look tomorrow night and report back. I'm not expecting miracles by then as the paint is stupendously thick but I'll update with a quick snap if I can operate my phone a manage to hold this up at the same time.

Removing the roof grills was a right pain. They both broke apart, one of them took part of the roof with it. I'm beginning to feel actual hatred toward the person who did this...

Yes...

I'm worried that when I get round to having a look all that will be left is a paint carcass, the body being dissolved in the Dettol.

We are out tonight so I won't get a chance to look at this until later tonight. Oh dear,
