Back from a fun night out - an improv night followed by an open mic night in the same boozer. We haven't been out for ages (at the same time!).

I'm now about to open the box...

It's the special active ingredient Chloroxylenol. Apparently it's used by the army to clean tanks and AFVs!

I'll wait until I'm slightly more sober to post pics, but I did laugh. If I didn't laugh I would have fewer windows tonight. Not only has it stripped the weathering paint, but ALL of it! I'm left with a maroon coloured body – the colour of the plastic from the mould – and, yes, you've guessed it, YELLOW ENDS!

I know I've been out to a comedy night but this should have been part of the act! The paint is very soft though (it still won't come off!) so maybe another soak over night will lift it. At the moment it wouldn't look out of place parked alongside a maroon 52 FYE...

SteveO,

Maroon - I think those Dettol fumes or perhaps the alcohol are having an effect on you. It's brown ;)

Steve,

If its down to the plastic and has removed ALL the paint that can be a good thing.. At least you can do whatever livery you want.

But make sure that all areas are clean especially around the windows/grills etc. Then give it a good clean using warm soapy water and a toothbrush.

The body needs to be really clean before you spray primer on it. The primer will show any areas that need a light rub down or cleaning further etc;).

There is a positive side to this as there is no glazing you can now use a more corrosive substance too remove the enamel, then you can repaint it into a better shade of BLUE

Jordan, you are correct. It's uncanny that the only colour I wanted to remove was the yellow, but that's the only colour that remained!

I had a quick stir and a look just now and it's definitely coming off. By the looks of it I could peel it off like a thick sticker. I'll leave on for a few more hours though as the detail areas are still stuck fast.

I had a major shock this morning when I tried to place an order with Howes for the spare parts. They have sold out of everything 47 related, except for a few red lights. I called Heljan direct and they said they would source the parts from suppliers throughout Europe for me – amazing service and a big "phew!" from me.

Well, it stripped fairly well. There are a few spots with paint still stubbornly attached, especially yellow (!!!) and a few bits of paint on superglue, etc but generally not too bad. The trouble is the Dettol softened the surface of the body so after scrubbing the paint (gloves and toothbrush) and washing in soapy water (no gloves and sponge) my fingerprints are embedded into the surface!

I can rub it down again without leaving too much evidence (that description is quite apt!) but I'd rather just start again with a new body. I've emailed the nice Danish chap who I spoke to earlier today so I'll await his reply.

F'ing nightmare!

I hope your in luck with a new body, otherwise it sounds like it's all gone a bit t*ts up :(

I wonder if leaving it in water for a few hours will stabilize the effects of the Dettol , then maybe left to dry/harden for a few days ?........doubt it, but sounds like you've nothing to lose.

Must admit though I have never heard of Dettol being used to strip plastic before

I too had never heard of the Dettol method. I always use "Modelstrip", it worked well for me.

Hope you get this sorted soon Steve. I look forward to seeing some pics of a nicely primed 47 soon;)

I'm thinking that my fingerprints have been left in a residue, rather than the bodywork. I'll need to find this out for sure, but I'm hopeful. Pics of the stripped body and the prints. You can see in the detail shot that there is still paint in the same area which seems like it wasn't all removed, hence the slimy fingerprints?

Have you tried flatting it off yet, using abrasive paper as it looks like as you say residue and not the plastic underneath

What colour is the plastic in the inside of the body? it looks to me as if you have got down to a primer rather than plastic

Now that it's fully dry, you can see much clearer the film that is probably paint residue, rather than molten bodywork. I washed it several times and rinsed it thoroughly but it was still slimy and sticky. I left it to soak overnight and took the pics above after I'd taken it out and patted it dry. So there may be hope after all.

I may try a more traditional method of stripping next and see what happens. Guv' the colour inside is the same as on the outside but no fingerprints or marks, which again supports the theory that this is paint residue on the outside.
