I'm surprised more blue era modellers don't model north of the border, ...
Don't enough already..?? My impression is that BR Blue Scottish branchline is the modern equivalent of the GWR BLT cliche... ::) :headbang: ... a certain Mr Futers has a lot to answer for - oops sorry Ross!! :)) :)) :))
Mindyou, not many besides Ian have done it in 7mm scale... yet, now the Heljan McRats are out.... ::)

You can almost say 'not any' apart from Ian have done it in 7mm  , but I was thinking more along the lines of 'Kyle of Tongue'  or even Kyle of Lochalsh but in 7mm rather than Ian's minimum space type layouts.
I think the appealing thing about Scottish diesel era models is the scope to run realistic branch line type operations & short trains within the diesel era without the whole thing looking ridiculous

My garage is approx 20ft long. I'm (& Rob) gonna try & fit Kyle of lochalsh, from the docks end, to after the bridge, after the signal box (If that makes sense). The bridge not connected to the station.
The track curves after the bridge, so that will be across the back of the garage.

I did like Kyle of Tongue (it's owner said (in RM article) his mates called it the Pyle of Dungue :)) ) and there was a Lochalsh 'clone' in 4mm called Strone Ferry I think...
Lochalsh is so recognisable that if you're going to copy it you might as well be as accurate as possible and keep the name...

Undoubtedly! An old magazine to look out for is the August 1980 Airfix "Model Trains", which had articles on the then-current Scottish Highlands branchline scene, and how to convert a Lima 33 to a 26. It was that very model (done by the Editor, Chris Ellis) that got to the attention of Lima UK at the time and prompted them to later make the 26 (and 27? not sure) available RTR.
At that time Ian Futers was doing Lochside in P4, which, although his first BR Blue Scottish layout, wasn't set on the Highland branches.

So 30 years later nostalgia has kicked in and people are playing catch-up with old ideas!!! :))

It was built by Dave Smart: Strone Ferry is a real place, by the way.

Oh poop! You beat me to it!
It's all these youngsters, you know - they have only ever seen Ian's West Highland Wanderings in RM.
(His second layout was WHR, albeit steam, of course.)

Yep: nothing new under the sun.

You need to be careful, mate: you'll be moving to the front of the class to sharpen the teacher's ink at this rate.

 I always thought Ian's 7mm layouts would benefit from being twice a long & twice as wide personally .........but then again I'm not into this minimum space type thing...........apart from Wythin Reach of course  8) 8) 8)

20 feet certainly sounds  do-able to me Steve .........although your boards will have to be quite wide to do both the sidings in front & behind the platform ?

Toying with the idea of just the near side of the station & the road coming onto the platform. But we'll have to wait & see.

The funny thing is, that is such a 'classic' view of Lochalsh, that for a few years that's all I thought there actually was - I was amazed when I first found pictures of the "other side" of the Station...!!   :)) :shit:

(yeah, I know... return to the Back of the Class.... :-[ :'( )
