That looks cute  although I do prefer them without the cab. actually calling it a cab is stretching it a bit!!

I agree not quite a cab - life must have been a bit rough for the driver/fireman in the winter on such as these.

Hi Rob,

Looking really good, 3.5 thick brass is going to take some soldering though or have you got a MIG welding set on stand-by?

Mike
Not quite Mike, but I do have a Microflame which I use for most things and I hope that it will cope with this

Just remember it will take a while to cool down! I speak from *ouch* experience

Thanks for that I will bear it in mind (once I have gone ouch no doubt) Well I got the buffer beams drillout for the buffers tonight and then discovered why they were cheap at the halifax show - the heads don't fit inside the shanks :headbang: :headbang: Nothing that running a drill down the inside of wont cure but it's another job. I have to admit they do look chunky. Picture tomorrow when i have done some more detailing.

Having drilled the buffer shanks out I managed to get them all in place and I also managed to take the detailing off the original buffers and transfer it to the new ones.

Other jobs completed today were shortening the crank pins and screws and after emailing various suppliers looking for a Steam reversing handle I got fed up with waiting for a reply so I made my own from various bits of brass.

I even managed to get it running up and down two yards of track but one of the con rods just needs loosening slightly. I also made up a set of really nice lost wax couplings - I was really impressed that they had managed to cast two of the three rings together so there is no join. And all for a £1 at Halifax.
I should be able to make more progress on detailing now - he says fingers crossed.

Hi Rob,

looking really good. The buffer beams look 'c ol' so ok to handle then  and gives a bit of added weightand where it's needed.

Thanks Mike, I took the easy way out for cooling - a dunk under the cold tap. The Governor was right about the time it takes them lumps of brass to cool!! In order to add lots of weight I filled the boiler with a rolled up piece of flashing.

While looking at the chassis today I noticed that one of the phosphor bronze springs has gone missing :headbang: I decided not to look for it in the theory that as soon as I make another it will turn up anyway - I will just delay making the replacement as long as I can.

I have made further progress today, getting the Chimney on and the smokebox door and handrail fitted. Next job just started is detailing the back-head. The plan to complete the above footplate details then do the brakes balance weights etc.

I am also itching to get on with the next project - my DJH A3, to the degree that I have been through the instructions and marked of all the parts that I don't need for my chosen model - 1928 Papyrus (my kit has the corridor tender and Papyrus kept one until 1937). I have also taken all the castings out of the packs and put them in multi-compartment boxes (?2.50 each with cards meant for embroidery cottons) with cards in each denoting which part numbers are in each compartment and putting the surplus parts in my just starting to grow 7mm spares box. I have never been so organised before starting on a kit - I don't know if that's a good thing or not, time will tell!

Progress has been a bit slow since the weekend. I have dry fitted a few bits to the back-head then my element went on my soldering iron - one of the Maplins solder stations. I managed to pick up some spares for about ?3 each from Maplin's online which was good as the last time I wound up paying almost ?10 for the full iron from an ebay trader as Maplins couldn't say when they would have spares available. It's a good iron and I use it quite a bit but it does seem to go through elements - this one went in last November so not that long. I have received them but haven't got around to fitting the element yet.

Anyway here's a couple of shots with the chimney etc and I must say I think it's now looking like a loco.

The chimney and door I picked up in a box of spares from ebay (bought specifically for the door - the other items were a bonus)

A good looking model of a very appealing prototype, almost enough to cure some people of hydraulicitis I should think

The issue of RM with Bob Alderman's model of "Severn" is one of my favourites, I very much look forward to seeing yours when it is painted :) .

Thanks Simon, I haven't seen that issue - could you tell me the issue number and I will seek it out.

I got the inspiration from Ken (Jazz of this parish) who detailed his build on RMWeb and was kind enough to let me have a copy of the plan he used and some detailed shots of things that were not clear from his RMWeb postings. I also invested in a book on the Shropshire and Montgomeryshire railway that had a couple of useful pictures resulting in mine differing slightly from Ken's fine example. I have the depth of spars box to draw that Ken has either so I suspect that mine has cost a bit more but t will still be a cheap7mm loco and it has developed lots of skills so it's worth much more to me for that alone.

  That's my occasionally play trains track for my quite extensive 4mm stuff (I still have about 60 or so 4mm brass kits to build - I keep contemplating selling them or some of them and then I think that I may as well have the pleasure out of building them) and as far as I have got since my teens with a layout - boards and two ovals of track

I have had a couple of weekend's work on this since I last posted an update and I have now added quite a bit of the detail above the foot plate. It still all needs fastening together - the smokebox, boiler and cab are all just placed in situ until I am absolutely certain that it all runs OK - I had a bit of binding with one of the coupling rods and I have ordered a 2.5mm reamer which should be here tomorrow.

I have also added the balance weights to the wheels in the style of Richard Lambert - plasticard front and back filled in the middle with Milliput. I have had to very much guess these as I didn't have a photo that showed them so I did the next best thing I copied what Jazz had done
The steps are up next and while I have them marked out I have been off ill today and haven't had the energy to cut them out - maybe tomorrow if I feel better.

Hi Rob,

the detailing is certainly bringing the model to life and talking of which, lets hope that you are also feeling better and wielding the fret saw again.

Cheers Mike, I am still a bit wonky today so I don't really expect to get anything done although it's usually a good indicator as to whether I am fit to return to work - If I cannot be bothered to model I am not fit to work :)

Cheers Guvnor, I know what you mean about 'Olde Worlde', it does have a "turn of the century" look to it.

It's only my third loco build - two 4mm kits before this so I am quite pleased with how it's turning out. I think that scratch building this has given me the confidence to tackle most things in future.

Rob Pulham's Work Bench - Severn Finished at Last

I have finally finished Severn, aside from a few minor tweaks before the paint shop (I found the missing spring so that will need to go back on). Painting will be delayed while September due to my garage being full at the moment so I cannot get in to paint. Progress has been slow due to my being ill for the last week but I rallied a bit on Saturday before it struck again with a vengeance yesterday. A visit to the docs and a hole in the pocket later from prescriptions and I hope to be better by the end of the week to take a friend up on his offer to give it a run on 'Marske' at the Redcar Show.

As ever pictures speak louder than words.

Starting with a detailed shot of the home made vacuum pipes - brass rod, guitar string, copper tube and some n gauge chain.

Hopefully the next time you see it it will be painted.

I am thanks,
Doing this has given me the confidence to tackle virtually anything (I think  ) - including etching and I have been having a closer look at the coach drawings. I still have a few minor tweaks but I may come back to them later in the week if I feel better.
