Well I have made a start on the A3 getting the inner tender complete with brakes and waterscoop and quite a bit of the tender itself constructed - the detailing on the frames except the castings and the front bulkhead. I also added the balance weights to the drivers and filled them with Milliput to make them solid.
I have to say the DJH instructions are somewhat lacking to say how much this kit cost.
I am not going to post a blow by blow account of the build due to the number of Hachette versions currently on the go so I will post pics as I complete the tender and chassis etc.

Hi Rob,
Severn looks really good, well done.
Best of luck with the A3 - I have built three DJH kits - the Fairburn tank, a Clan and Deltic, all had faults and/or parts not even supplied which should have been there and the overall experience with DJH themselves has made me take the decision not to do anymore. Having said that, you do end up with a good looking loco, but have to go through the mill a few times to get there - all totally un-necessary as it takes out the enjoyment of the build completely.

It's etched and I agree about the cast parts athough I have been surprised so far in that the tender is almost all etch. There are also a quite a few lost wax castings another surprise but you have to have something for your ?500, I shouldn't complain as it was a surprise Christmas gift last year.

I have given my good lady a list to choose from and there was only one DJH kit on it and that was the Tower/DJH Streamlined Duchess, but I did have the David Andrews version on the list as well (I plan to etch the 1939 Streamlined Coronation Scot set that went to America so I would need a Streamlined Duchess to go with it). I know she has bought something but not what and now I have to be patient until the 15th of October before finding out what. But you never know I may have finished the A3 and be ready to make a start on the birthday gift straight away

I built the David Andrews 'de-streamlined' version for a friend and as usual with David's kits, it went together without a hitch. Powered by an ABC gearbox/Canon motor and fitted with JPL cast wheels.

Hi CME,
I had used them on a few other models and I think that they have a better 'appearance' to them over Slaters - JPL are rim insulated as opposed to cut spoke insulation that Walsall do.

Thanks Mike, I agree with CME a lovely looking model. I have heard nothing but good about David Andrews and I will definitely have to have one at some point. I am fairly confident that Chris hasn't got me a DJH after all my mutterings.
I also had a Finney Duchess on the list (wishful thinking I know at the price, but if you don't include it you have no chance :laugh: )

I have almost completed the tender - just the whitemetal castings to put on They are really quite detailed and very little flash to clean off, but one of them is damaged so I will have to send it back to DJH.
I have just taken delivery of some hobby holidays hornblocks and some flanged roller bearings so hopefully it should run quite freely.

Thanks for that Cynric, I will watch what I am doing with them. I haven't really studied how the HH horn blocks fit but presumably you can solder the outer brass piece and add the inner etched bit with the bearing in once you have rinsed and dried the chassis?
They did't come with any instructions but I have emailed Phil at Hobby Holidays for a set.

It's only a pound postage to anywhere in the world and the bearings are cheap at ?1.25 each as well.

Tonight I managed to finish the tender for the A3 and mighty fine it looks too - sadly no photo's due to the camera being packed for tomorrows jollies. :wave: :wave:
Even though it is predominantly brass it still weighs quite a bit with the castings for the corridor adding to the weight.

A few pictures of the finished tender - I still need to fit the coupling but I have ordered a set of JLRT brass buckeyes with a view to replacing the white metal one supplied by DJH with one that at least moves (I hope).
