I’d like to add some character to my recently acquired Duke - a severely dented dome to be precise - but I just can’t muster the courage to harm it at present. Perhaps the purchase of a suitable replacement part to practice on might be the eventual solution.....

Mutton acquited itself quite admirably at the Midland Small Layout Showcase last Saturday.
A very enjoyable show with most of the day spent answering various questions from visitors and other exhibitors alike.

The Radials behaved themselves in general though 30583 (early crest) received a stiff talking to at one point.

A slight issue arose (literally ) when a point in the fiddle yard developed a slight bow. I'm putting this down to a revised support system which allowed a slight sag at one end. This in turn caused a spot of tension at the base board joint.

The net result was a spot of slip as the Hornby Radials do not cope well with changes in gradient.

I have revised the support system, adding some cushioning at the joint between the two timbers.

The 'L ' brackets which hold the fiddle yards on have no capacity for vertical movement so this is next to be addressed.

Mutton is next out and about in August so I have a bit of time to resolve this particular issue.

They are from the Roger Smith range, L&SWR signs. Etched in Nickel Silver, they are quite tricky to paint but they look very nice once done.

Once primed and painted, they are weathered with powders before being planted.

Morning all.

Not a huge amount going on here at present.

A month today Mutton will be at Exmoor Rail in Minehead.

As alluded to after the Midland show, there are a few jobs to attend to on Mutton and it's stock.

The Radials need a look over and some detail adding to them.

Finally add the coal to the bunkers...

Guard rails to the rear windows on the early crest version of 30583.

Replace/tweak various details disrupted when handled.

Stock wise, all good. I may well weather a cattle wagon for a bit of variety. I also need to replace a coupling here and there.

Layout wise, I need to finally resolve the run in from the fiddle yards which suffers a tad due to my supports/brackets.

Tweak the scenics, add a bit of detail here and there.

General tidy up.

That will do I think.......
