Simon,

There are two books about trains in the eighties, published by Strathwood. Listed on TTT website, I cannot find any reviews of the contents - might you have written reviews of those titles?

regards, Graham

And courtesy of the shop, finally a book on the railways of Somerset, that doesn't contain pictures of the S&D. At last recognition that there were other railways in Somerset. Compare "Steam in Somerset", Derek Huntriss (Ian Allan 1996) 57% of pictures are of the S&D. "Somerset Steam" Michael Welch (Capital Transport 2008) of which 11% are of the S&D (getting better!). Now "Impermanent Ways Volume 5 Somerset" published by Jeffrey Grayer (2013) zero pictures of the S&D.

If I want pictures of the S&D, I'll buy a book on it.

By the way, any news on that book "The Convenience of the S&D" a detailed study of the station toilets down the line....

And not forgetting those wonderful books by Sellick etc on the West Somerset Mineral Railway, and (an old D&C title) - The History of the Somerset Coalfield by Down and Warrington containing interesting detail on the (some very small) colliery rail connections.

Sadly no, but on its way are two volumes of aerial views of the aforementioned railway which was of course partially sited in Somerset and which bore the name of that county in its own illustrious name:)

Shall I put sir down for one or both?:p

Actually you have just come up with a great idea for a silly thread to do with (train) books, ie titles that suit/take the mickey out of subjects or publishers.

Years ago I came up with

"Ozone over Oswestry" which was clearly going to be a history of little known street tramways in the Northern Welsh Marches, published by Oakwood Press.

Then there was "More Great Western Steam Volume 14" published by....

What larks!

Unfortunately, Down & Warrington does contain S&D footage...

Thinking of silly books, how about the ones where one feels one is being ripped off. The title promises a lot, the content fails to deliver.

You may put me down for a copy of the latest Jeffrey Grayer volume, please Simon!

Any idea where that other book is, that we spoke of recently, please?

I am rather fond of Jeffrey Grayer's books but as it contains no pictures of the S&D despite purporting to be a book on the railways of somerset I shall have to have a flick through first:)

Will probably pick one up off you at the fabulous narrow gauge show in Shepton on the 16th Simon.

It is winging its way on to you as we speak, I kicked the packaging gnome and he retrieved it from under the dusty pile of excess second hand S*mers*t and D*rs*t books that nobody wants to buy and stuck it in some cardboard for you.

You are additionally favoured with a unique postcardy thing inside complete with a jolly encouraging message:p.

The card came from a unique retail emporium that has a miniature railway connection, you are one of a very select number of people I feel able to inflict it on send it to:)):))

Toodle Pip, it's time to leave da shop!

I had cause to telephone "Da Shop" today - The "Shop" of Larkhall - with an enquiry about the focus and content of a couple of books.

Guys and Gals, we are really lucky to have such a bookshop "by appointment to" etc.. Apart from taking the time to find the titles, read the chapter headings and then give an opinion on the breakdown of photos (era, service, location), Simon was more than willing to run through a fair number of other options which are in stock. Looks like I need a visit to see what is what.

I have booked the sofa for Friday afternoon, 1st March, may even take some biscuits to go with the tea.

Agreed, my only advice would be to allow plenty of time. Its a very relaxing environment that Simon has created in 'da shop' and time can just slip away.........:)

Ooh I went there once when I were a lad! Just off the A38 I think? A few years ago a bit of a former client's wood fell into the road just down the valley.
