Red letter day today, I am typing this from my laptop at the shop via my new BT broadband connection - it is a bit wobbly, I suspect a cable....

Just considering stock options, about to place Peco order to expand existing lines. I have received Bachmann account opening info, but am not sure this going to be possible for one reason and another.

What I really need now is a good general model wholesaler, glue, balsa, odd airfix kits etc.

All going prettywell, need to do more promotion now and get the second hand stock across from home, a job for tomorrow I think.

I was going to ask if the second hand stock had made it to the shelves yet. I think it's one of those things that would encourage browsing and repeat visits.

You sure the shop broadband connection is a good idea. I used to while away hours on interweb toy train forums at work. Have I told you about the huge bill I racked up for the city council when we were on pay as you go dial up? Huge temptation and I'm a weak willed chap.

Second hand is largely deployed, a mind boggling array of books, extending to nautical, canal and some road transport. No real "superstar" books but very little cr@p and a fantastically eclectic collection of pamphlety jobbies. One or two things I'm tempted to keep for myself, possibly the most interesting being a booket of railway memories by Peter Matthews of Private Owner wagon fame, which covers some obscure bits of railway and which I have never seen before.

Coming from a librarian there are some wonderfully academic things too. Only problem is that I can't fit them all on to the "alloted" book case. I have set up some "browsing boxes" in those coloured jobbies you and I brought back from the Llanfair show for the leaflety stuff.

Broadband-wise I'm not too worried as there is just so much left to do in the shop, and later on I will hopefully be too distracted by customers to allow myself to get too immersed in online-ery.

What I am looking forward to is doing a bit of modelling on the counter - just got to build the blessed thing first!!

PS I have just ordered in a very interesting looking new book on railway landscape modelling, by Tony Hill (of the trees fame) and just published by Crowood. I have also ordered in a book of theirs on modelling techniques and materials which looks intriguing.

I spoke to Vic Mitchell today, expanding my holding of Middleton Press books, MRJ 202 will be with Wild Swan tomorrow so I should have supplies by Thursday and next on my hitlist are a few WW1 militaryish and modelling titles (including armoured trains) from Osprey.

The shop is definitely filling up, maybe a Peco order is next on the list.

Sales-wise it is gently building, I need to move on to new round of promotion I think although doing the local shows in the New Year will boost things a bit.

And as of today Whitemans is still limping towards retail oblivion, looking very sad indeed.

I will have to check the book, I think the image that is printed might be slightly cropped.

Sadly Jeff doesn't have the number, he was walking away from the line having had a mooch around when he heard the train coming and was only able to "grab" the picture shown.

Apart from anything else it shows the operation of the Presflos with the slate dust carried by road fron Delabole to Wadebridge for onward rail tranportation.

A brilliant picture I agree :thumbs:

It's on page 99 of 'In the Tracks of the ACE' - by Jeffery Grayer, right enough...

The caption doesn't give details of the loco or the date..



Come on Simon - what would a photo of Grogley Halt be doing in a book about the S&D anyway??!!  ;D ;)

Grogley halt, a well known stopping place on the line from Burkville to Twerptown :-[

All of which reminds me that I need to re-order that book for the shop - thank you very much!

PS "Grogley on the S&D" - now why should that present a problem to the man that ran the prototype deltic on the 6.05 Bath to Binegar  :))

I new I had seen that pic somewhere  :scratch:  :)), page 11 (Sherborne) is a lovely period piece too  8).........mind you so is the whole book (as are all the books  by Jeffery that I have) :thumbs: :thumbs: :thumbs:
