7mm Fettling Madness (If it ain't broke - fix it!)

Hello all,

Ok here goes in a very thumbnailed heavy pictorial record of fettling madness is activity in my workshop (if the kids aren't eating or drawing in it) - (at least with kids we get an excuse to play with Lego and the residue left after bathtime is good for underframe weathering...).

First up a summary of what's in the queue:

Trucks Nov 12 015 (800x531).jpg

Slater's standard van to paint etc...

Trucks Nov 12 024 (800x531).jpg

MMP tank to paint etc...

Trucks Nov 12 041 (800x531) (400x266) (2).jpg

This wee beasty needs the blue tie dye treatment (and it runs like a pig in a leotard)

cct 004 (800x531).jpg

The CCT - interior, paint, transfers then weather like it ain't seen a wash plant since '68!

But for now the continuation of this monster - the 47/0 to be ....:D:D

I'm at the stage where the chassis units are almost done. They just require final painting and the pick-ups fitting (phosphor bronze strip mounted on copperclad strip type stuff) as per below:

bodyscrew 001 (800x600).jpg

The body sections have been cleaned up and fettled to fit nicely. The cab back walls have been soldered up including captive nuts as below:

bodyscrew 011 (800x600).jpgbodyscrew 004 (800x600).jpg

I'm now working on buffer beams/cab desk and seating. I've decided (yet again ) to against the DJH best advice and do these items as a single fit in unit to the cab section (with detachable buffer beam for painting).
So that's progress to date - more will follow with pictures (unfortunately with the same rubbish depth of field - sorry!!).

Regards

Stu

You do know that the bogies of the 47 are fixed in the wrong position if you use the kit as supplied. They are about 1-2mm too far forward and you cannot fit the buffer beam properly unless you fix it.

If you need more details let me know.

Thanks for that heads up Richard. It should be a fairly easy re-bore of the hole on the mounting thingy... ...appreciated ta!

I put in a spacer, a piece of plasticard for example, to push the bulkhead to which the bogies screw into back to the right place.

Ah yes - of course - now you see why I (unnecessarily on many occasions) indulge in fettling....

Thanks again!

I was planning on moving the bogie pivot hole 2mm inwards - I am, at times, blind to the obvious solutions:rolleyes:

It's not that obvious Stu, I got it from a thread on RMweb, its in the special interest section for class 47's if you want to look it up.

Hello dear reader.

Progress on the 47 is intense (for me). I'd post pics but they'd be of cut down screws and cab interiors in primer... ...boring?

Meanwhile my mind churns with thoughts of scratch building mayhem... ...the planned class 104 'tin can'.
1. Construction will be brass - ideas on thickness for the sides/cabs/ends most welcome?
2. Drawings from PDH are ordered and I have 60 odd images (inside and out) of the 2 vehicles.
3. Cab roofs... ...plasticard formed to shape? Any ideas?
4. Castings for underframe/bogies - Easybuild? Any other sources?
5. Window frames - I plan to cut out the window openings and (hopefully) overlay etchings (mk1 size? DMU size?) maybe the drawings will clarify?
6. Oh and it will of course be all blue!

Any thought ideas most welcome...

Thanks and regards

Stu

DJH do seem to get the shape of their diesels reasonably spot on, I think their class 47 is the closest anyone has got to the 'face' of a 47 IMHO and white metal has weight and presence and if the body is not too badly deformed (an issue with some Deltic shells) an ease to work on.

I have small amount of walkaround photos of a 47, I will send them to my Dropbox account this evening for y'all, mostly bogies and underframe detail which I was using as a guide for my MMP 57 build.

Thank you Mick. The pewter body is a massive casting and, luckily, mine was pretty straight. I looked at the PRMRP 31 as a build option (former MMP?) but I was put off with the inaccuracies in body profile and 'face look'. The DJH 31 is a great looking build, but I just can't afford another one - The 47 cost more than the value of my car!

DJH don't always get their diesel body shapes correct, take a look at the 40 or the 37 both have a far too steep nose profile.
Sadly I only discovered this once I'd built my 40. A real shame as the kits are excellent otherwise.

I bought a mint Tower/DJH Warship kit a few months ago. It will be some time before I have the courage to start it, but Christian Cresswell's build of one on the 'Building 0 Gauge Online' website certainly has the right 'face' for me.

Nope, your right, the Class 40 isn't up to par alongside their other stuff, not up to speed on the 37 but take your word for it :).

I nearly dropped for the 31 a few months back but the Heljan model looks pretty good from what I saw, I'm no Class 31 expert and I'm sure they will point out the flaws but if they are acceptable to me, I'll have one and probably one of their 40s as well.

Class 47 images added to my Dropbox thread.
