The other thing the L&Y did in yards, just to make life easier for us modellers, was to run 2 sleepers alongside the rails before fitting the setts. I know not why, unless it made footing easier near to the wagons, but it also needs to be represented.
Two sleepers against the outide face of the rail?  So the setts are at least 20 inches from the rail?  (or could that be two timbers of 12 inch width... ).
Maybe that means that the rail / chairs / sleepers can be replaced without lifting the setts....

The form tools are shown in the following photo. Nothing sophisticated, but any bigger and they might not have coped with the (desired) fluctuations in the road surface. It doesn't really come across in the photos, but the road surface undulates, adding to the 3 D effect of the setts.
Thanks for that!

Dangerous to assume, I know, but I have always thought that this would be to enable easier replacement of the track.

Thanks Graham, Simon

Now you've said it, it makes perfect sense to allow for rail replacement etc. without having to mess about with the setts.

I'm trying to get to the stage where there is plenty of things to maintain interest in the layout without any trains visible...
Otherwise known as catching the 'atmosphere' of a place... ;)
This sort of attention to detail really helps set location too - to my mind cobbled yards and streets mean "Northern Town"...
If I saw this layout for real, and could smell coal & smoke, I wouldn't be at all surprised.... ;D

Hi

Having done a few more setts, I wanted to have a play to see how they would come out painted, and whether my thoughts on colour worked.
It must be 25 years since I last did any scenic work, and my how things have moved on in the meantime!

I used Tamiya acrylics, buff as a base coat, dry brushed with dark gray and with a weak black wash over the lot when dry.

Hi Richard,

looking really good. You could use some of the Tamiya weathering blocks on individual setts - being a 'natural' product, there were strong colour variations.

cheers

Looks pretty damn good to me, like you say when there's some green added and a bit more colour variation it will really come to life

I like Tamiya products - glad that the sprays are available again......did you use an undercoat?

Hi CME

Thanks, it's nice when an idea/plan/technique comes together.

I didn't use an undercoat, but I did dilute the buff coat. I found that covered nicely anyway so I didn't apply a second coat, just went straight on to the dry brushing with the dark grey. Whether it would have been quite so easy had I started with the red Das.........?

Cheers

Hi Phill, Rob

The track in the setts photos is in fact part of the original layout, so I have done nothing to it. There is very little of the original trackwork left, just a few straight bits and a couple of sidings. It needs a bit of a going over, fishplates adding, ballast tidying etc. but it's otherwise OK.

The van is one of a number that I built but which were painted by Tony Geary (Dibateg). He has some pretty huge batch painting sessions, so I slip a dozen wagons or so in hoping he wont notice. The label is from a sheet of labels and was distressed using a fibreglass burnishing pen.

Regards

Richard

Hi

We've ramped up the pressure on construction work, and things are moving apace. We've almost finished the 'engineering' side and will be on the very long home scenic run shortly. We've been working on the return to the fiddle yard at the warehouse end, and have separated the boards to work on. This has given the opportunity to take some photos from vantage points that have hitherto not been available.

From the tunnel mouth (twin bore, based closely on Farnworth east portal) looking back to the warehouse curve

Looking fantastic... It's going to be a bugger to transport with all that low relief isn't it ?

Question is... I've got myself a Gibson 4f kit cheap... Do I build it Scale7, or 0FS and come and run it on Heyside ??

JB.

Hi JB

Yes, transporting it. Hmmm. Not got our heads round that one yet. There are some big boards - too big - and high too. It's only the knowledge that it has already been done that keeps me going!

I'd love you to build a 4F for Heyside (can't have too many 4Fs), but I know you would be dissatisfied doing so, being narrow gauge 'n all. Putting inside valve gear in is a tricky task too without the extra width. However, If you wish to confirm practically your decision to go S7, by all means do so!

Richard
