As a spotty youth growing up in Cornwall, the sight of another D63xx brought an internal groan. Westerns and Warships please! I suppose all of those responsible for the cutting of 6319 are no longer of this world. I’ve got no one to vent my spleen at now. Still, maybe the group trying to build one may succeed.

I don't particularly like them but they were (unfortunately) part of the North Cornwall scene. They look a bit sad and as though they have been picked on by the other bigger diesels. Poor things.

They would never win many marks if judged on style. They were just plain ugly, which why over 50 years ago, I didn’t much care for with them. Therefore in 1971, I never bothered to photograph and take a cab ride in 6330 at the St Blazey depot open day. Instead, 806 Cambrian got the honours. I regret that now. Should have done both. I haven’t so far been tempted by the LLC model. It’s really out of my era for Kelly Bray. I will confess to a Heljan Western, with etched plates D1005 WESTERN VENTURER fitted. It was the last Western I saw in BR service and is consequently one of my favourite members of my all time favourite UK diesel locomotive class. I just had to have one, even though it’s a shelf queen.

Not to mention a very nice green small prairie too.:)

Apparently well and truly delayed to much later this year.

There is a lovely Prairie build on Heather Kays workbench at the moment worth a look, albeit an early version ( appeals to my timeframe ).

I am considering a Prairie to build when I eventually finish the Dean Goods but I also have an Armstrong Goods to do before that !

John really liked the one I brought to run on Tregeglos.

I much prefer the small 4 wheel bogie diesels to any of the bigger ones. You'll come to love yours in time.

And there's me who has no idea what one looks like, but then I can't tell one from another when it comes to diesels or electrics.

Spotted the typo there Stu. "John really hated the one I brought to run on Treneglos". Think that's what you meant.

To complete my diesel period (AC Railbus for the one passenger and Class 22 for other traffic) perhaps one of these could be warranted for use on the clay branch?:

They were trialled on the Wenford line but not overly successful iirc.

Of the early big diesels I think my favourites are the Westerns and Hymeks. Won't be getting either though.

My equivalent of your must have purchase is probably the Finney7 Bulleid. Far to big for the layout but my all time favourite class. Closely followed by the T9, N Class, BWT and Std 4 Tank.

Yes, I've been watching Heather tackle that kit. Going to be superb when finished.

Chris,
Sorry to be pedantic, but from the photos I have seen, they were Drewey 203hp diesels. Class 04. The cab is different for a start.
The Class 03 was the later BR built version, same engine and gearbox, different body. However, Rule 1 etc.

Interesting Stu. Brick is not that common a material used in Cornwall for buildings of that age. However, Trellisick is a large estate and the squire could afford to import from up country. Great photo. Years since I’ve been there. Spring is best when the Rhododendrons are flowering.

You got me searching through books after that comment Paul.

Where have you seen mention of 04s?

The only photos I've found of small diesel shutters on the Wenford line were 03s and 08s. The 08s were spot on for the clay branch but couldn't fit around the curves at Wadebridge Quay. The 03s were OK on the Quay but underpowered on the branch. 03s used initially unit 08s took over once the Quay fell out of use.

D2127 appears in a few photos:
rps20190120_142833.jpg
Bradford Barton B&W book

rps20190120_142212.jpg
M&P Bodmin Branches book

The above extracts hopefully show an 03?Not convinced that the two dates are right. If they are D2127 had wasp stripes in 1965 but lost them by 1966....

Searching around the internet has given the following info for the 03s based at St Blazey:

D2127
24/08/1964 arrived St Blazey
14/05/1967 Reallocated to Laira

D2129
07/10/1961 Arrived St Blazey
11/04/1965 Reallocated to Landore

D2183
21/04/1962 Arrived St Blazey
19/05/1962 Reallocated to Laira
08/11/1964 Reallocated to St Blazey
14/05/1967 Reallocated to Taunton

Another shot of D2127 on the branch: Boscarne Junction. D2127 & brake van special. 10.9.66

Edit: and one of D2127 at the clay dries:
Wenford Bridge Stannon China Clay Works. D2127 & special. 10.9.66

That’s an o3, my mistake . Sorry. Leslie’s still in hospital and I’ve gone down with something now :( . It’s all a bit carp at the moment. Brain is addled and not thinking straight. I’ll go sit on the naught step with a lemon and honey plus a dash of brandy.

No worries. You've sent me down an interesting diversion of research though trying to work out if D2127 lost its wasp stripes in late 1965/ early 1966 or (more likely IMO) the Bradford Barton book has the wrong loco or wrong date for the wasp stripe photo...

Best wishes - add more brandy is my advice.

There is also a large kitchen garden and a whole stable block & courtyard made from brick. Other NT gardens in Cornwall also have brick walled gardens - must be a money thing asyou suggest.
