7mm Ressaldar's Workshop - a paintshop diversion

some time ago, General Ploffers suggested that I might get the vents for the inspection saloons in a doll's house shop - went to Chester with SWMBO yesterday and guess what - I now have a dozen 'modern' door knobs with a slight concave end for the knockdown price of £3.98 so I just need to make the 'housing' and I'm away.........watch this space in the not too distant.

I look forward to seeing those Mike, our local model shop (as opposed to the box shifter - we have two) also does stuff for all sorts including shipbuilding and dolls houses. I have used ship bits before (the round windows on Severn's cab are ships portholes) but not any doll house stuff yet.

Hi Mike,

Very nice and the transfers have come out very well , I might be wrong but I think the ends were painted black in GWR days and also in the carmine and maroon eras.

Martyn.

Ooops forgot to ask Mike,

What parts of the NQLTRT didnt you use . was it ALL the underframe ?.

Also what is your conclusion to the project.?. Which is the better kit ( i guess there wont be many people buying both to make one). What parts are crap and why?

But most of all was it a worth while project and did you enjoy the build ?

IMHO If you are going to buy one kit I would go JLTRT, apart from plasticine steps, and moving the buffers out it just needs an internal rocking unit and some better tie bars and it will look fine trundling around the garden.

I might be wrong but werent some painted bauxite as well?

Looks good Mike, now I uderstand the comments you made on my CCT build about the underframe.
JLTRT seem to have a real aversion to anything that might need soldering even when that is clearly the best option for the model. Teir white metal castings can be a real hit and miss affair sometimes great but sometimes only fit for th bin.

Hi Rob,

if it had been in Blue, it could have been any colour at all under the weathering - I do not intend to do too much to this one.

The only JLTRT bits I used underneath were the floor, battery box & dynamo, everything else is WEP. The etched brakegear and W irons look more scale than the whitemetal offerings and also have/give a better build feel over the whitemetal.

I am very pleased with the outcome especially as it was my first real 'cut & carve' exercise as opposed to 'detailing'. It has encouraged me to persue the idea of converting the H33 Resaurant Coach into the S&T Inspection Saloon KDW150266 which will be another JLTRT 'cut & carve'. It was mainly the overscale thickness and quality of the whitemetal castings for the trussing and brakegear from JLTRT that put me off using them. If I prceed with the Inspection Saloon, I'll use brass angle etc from Metalsmith for the trusses etc. The whitemetal bogies from JLTRT are quite good, the Commonwealth ones on the GUV 'worked' quite well with the springing - especially when the springs were softened, so they should not be a problem on the H33. Fortunately, the conversion work on the body is just one side and both ends.

I hope that this covers all of your questions.

Mike

The brakegear also needs attention.

According to the JLTRT blurb, it says that some were in Bauxite late in life.

Hi Richard,

I should have made myself clearer before. Agree with your comment regarding the whitemetal, see my reply to Rob above.

Hi Mike,
have just checked the rear cover of Dorset Steam which has a photo of an ex works Fruit D behind a Merchant Navy pacific and can confirm the ends of that vehicle were maroon.
Fine work.
Cheers

Hi Mike,

The only reason that I had any doubt was Kev Lewis of the "other" parish has built one and on his blog he has finished it in carmine with black ends, but it now looks like Roger has now confirmed that the vans were just one colour  .

Although if the Guv'nor is correct, I think they would look the biz in bauxite :).

Hi Martyn,

I think that it may be correct for carmine, other carmine coaching stock had black ends, but I think that most if not all maroon stock was one colour all round.

As I siad earlier, ther eis not much difference between bauxite and heavy dirt:))

cheers
