I almost forgot to mention, it's even in blue especially for Ian!

You must be so pleased with yourself for building this model of such an unusual prototype, the livery looks just right.  Blue did you say?.

best wishes Graham

Hi Rob,

cracking paint job there, almost a shame to cover the brass - is there just a slight coincidence that it's very akin to Garter Blue?

cheers

Wow that's lovely; I do like how it captures the transition from the birth of steam locomotives to the elegant confidence of the Victorian heyday. Is it destined to be lined out?

Thanks Gents, yes I am very proud of it. Even though it doesn't fit into my modelling interests as such it was a very enjoyable exercise and I do like scratch building. I intend to do more but my kit pile is growing so it may be a while.
Mike, while it is akin to garter blue (and I do intend an A4 in garter blue at some point) it is one of the Halfords spray cans I knew the S&MR had a blue livery so I just picked an attractive looking non metallic one from the Halfords range (originally destined for a Ford I think with out going out and looking at the can) I will probably use it up at some point as an under coat for garter blue perhaps, or as I also desire to do at least some of the LMS Coronation Scot complete with Streamlined Duchess it would do as a base coat for the coaches (I am tempted to do the loco in red/gold)

Thanks Neil, I haven't quite decided on the lining yet. I haven't got a decent shot where you can identify the lining.

That is just just lovely, better if I may say so than Bob Alderman's model featured in "Railway Modeller" a few years ago - and that was good!

There's a lot to be said for both early locomotives and "growing your own" - well done indeed

Thanks Simon, that is praise indeed.

I saw the article on Bob's build, by coincidence after I had finished mine (or all apart from a couple of lamp irons). I think that I managed to get a few more detailed photo's than Bob had when he built his - I posted some pictures on the guild web site and he commented at the time that he had struggled to get any decent photos. I liked the way he had made the inside cylinders round but having looked at the photos I have them the right shape.

Lovely.  Can't really say more than that.

+1 for the satisfaction of scratchbuilding - your photos have provided me with the spur necessary to move my current project a bit closer to completion.

Thanks and funny you should say that Steph, because your continental build has inspired me to have a go at scratchbuilding a GCR Bogie fish van.

The guild website lists and Edwards drawing for it so I plan to order one and have a go in plasticard once I run out of Slaters/Parkside wagon kit's

Rob,

That's fantastic!  I'll be at Halifax G0G bash with the Continental, I think it's your neck of the woods so it'd be good to meet at the show.  Please bring Severn with you, I'd like to see it in the flesh...

That sounds like a plan Steph. I will arrange timing a bit nearer the day.

Rob, First thing I ever made in 7mm ( about 1970) was GCR Bogie fish van!. No idea what happened to it.
I'm trying to get people to try scratchbuilding as according to the editor of one of our model mags  who was here the other day , its very much a dying art. Pity really because its far more satisfying. I saw Evercreech New yesterday which was very nice but not one scratch built loco I'm afraid.

There's a coincidence Graham.
I don't know why but ever since I first saw one in my copy of A Pictorial record of LNER Wagons I fancied building one. If I make a decent job there are several 4 wheeled variations I could try too.

You didn't happen to use the Edwards drawing did you? I wouldn't mind knowing how detailed it is. But to be fair if I can get the overall dimensions from it then I can get the details from the photo.

Thats very nice Rob  I think it needs lining though  :))
I would concur that scratchbuilding is a dying art, but I would also suggest that the same could be said of building metal kits.....

Hi Cynric, I am quite happy to have a go at lining, if someone can show me where the lines go :headbang:. just wait until you see my Milk van next :D
On the subject of scratch/metal kit build being a dying art, I will do my best to keep it alive at this end and fortunately I am not alone on this forum.

Absolutely lovely seeing a master at work and what a pleasing shade of blue now if you just had half a DMU in blue as a coach for it to tow totally modern scene
