Too good to ignore.

Hi Colin,

I have just tried to send you a pm but I see that you have disabled the ability to do so. I have a question to ask if I may. Would you be kind enough to start a conversation with me?

You can ask me here, no problem....Colin
Thanks Colin,

You may/may not be aware, that my good lady is a railway artist. As I commented above, your latest photo of the two exGN tank engines would make a super painting and I wondered if you would grant permission for her to use your image? You will of course (assuming that you wish to be) credited as in the write up that we do, to accompany the finished painting.

If you haven't seen any of Chris's works that I have posted here on WT, they can be found on her website here - Chris Pulham You can also see where other kind people who have allowed their images to be used have been credited.

Many thanks

Regards Rob

These are public images that were once displayed publicly on a French auction site, they're not mine. I simply put them by knowing they were of a certain qualilty and historical value and that they might well please others. My main interest is NG but knowing that if the photos weren't sold they might well disapear forever i thought it best to keep them aside just in case....Colin.

Ahh, got you. I mistakenly thought that they were scans from photos that you had bought at said auctions. Thanks for clarifying.

Rob,

I am sure there are no copyright rules/problems with basing a painting on a photograph. Good practice to advise the copyright holder but I doubt that the eBay seller owns it.

Hi Ian,

I agree, as I understand it from someone whose permission I asked, they are classed as derived works rather than direct breaches of copyright but it's always polite to ask where you can. Certainly the guy who explained it was very grateful for my asking.

For the info, it's wasn't ebay and the French auction were selling the photos on the behalf of the original photographers family in Portugal, in case there are any problems or doubts of breach of copyright i can remove the photos posted and stop those planned....Colin.

Colin,

Thank you for correcting me and my sincere apologies if I have offended you, that was certainly not my intention. Also I do hope you do not remove the pictures which have been fascinating and quite unlike most photographs of the age. I am sure I speak for a lot of folks on here who are wondering just what other gems you have to show.

Ian.

This one with the cleaner astride the loco boiler is at Kings Cross, again taken in the mid to late 1920s. The shed on the left would have been the engine cleaning shed and the main loco shed is behind the photographer. The goods yard is on the right.

The larger building just behind the wooden cleaning shed would have been the roundhouse (aka 'Derby Shed') originally built to house Midland Railway locos before they built their own terminus next door at St Pancras. After the Midland departed in 1861 the roundhouse was used by the GN as a carriage and wagon shop. In 1931 this and the cleaning shed were demolished and a new running shed built on the site of the cleaning shed. The shed behind the photographer became a repair shop.

Also it shows the boiler cladding join along the top is not neatly down the centre line - another prototype for everything department.
