Wantage Tramway No.5

Slow progress but bit by bit I'm getting there. Lampirons and the first of the two side panels. I only modelled one front lampiron as this is how it's depicted in several pictures I have. I'm not complaining as it's one less part to make!






Side panel is just propped in place (as is the firebox/boiler/smokebox) so hopefully will be better lined up in due course.

I will get it finished this year. I promise! It's a bit tricky at the moment however as my model-making area is now having to double up as a home-office as I'm working from home due to the Coronavirus situation. I haven't even got a layout to run it on as it's packed away in the loft. I'm thinking of making a little shunting diorama to keep me going.

Mike, don’t be too hard on yourself - the images look great! If you take very close-up images, especially without a macro capable lens, you can get some image distortion. It does not detract from seeing the great progress being made. Keep it up.

Thank you for your encouraging words. I was hoping to finish off the brakes but I've had a bit of a hold-up on some nuts & bolts which I've ordered. Still plenty to do though and I'll post more pictures once tangible progress is made.

I must say it amazes me how much work is involved in such a little loco. Is there some sort of reverse logic to this? Ive been eyeing up a Crosti 9f as a future project and would hope the build time is months not years!

Believe me she is not that small.
OK, smaller than a Pannier, but a lot larger, in real life, than you think.
When you can visit Didcot and see the real thing.
Have you decided on the final livery yet?

Probably green. I know there's been some debate over this but I think green will suit my model. We shall see.

Side sheets done and starting to add some more bits to the cab. Brakes are still awaiting delivery of some nuts and bolts, so not able to get those finished yet. Sand box in the cab looks awry in the picture but looks ok in the flesh. Hang on! Didn't they say the camera never lies?

Im very fortunate in I have a 3D CAD friend and an etching friend, so I have some more parts than you’d normally get for this loco. Sadly none of your skill in the required putting together though!

If you saw some of the bodgery that goes on behind the scenes in my model-making you may have a different view on my apparent skills!. I often look on in envy at the masterpieces that grace this forum, but I know that I've done the best I can on my own efforts. It's a hobby and be proud of what you've achieved. So...... please post some pictures of what you're currently working on. I'm sure it will be of inspiration to us.

Very well said. We should all be encouraging each other. Our hobby is about a journey, like life, and we pick up and learn new skills along the way, hopefully honing them to a higher standard. No-one should be intimidated by the work of others, as those skills do not come easily, but are within the reach of us all, and we should aspire to learn and grow.

Nothing to feel downhearted about!

I have a very particular interest because I've just received a 4mm etch of Jane that I'm just trying to get my head around.
So your 7mm build is an inspiration to me....

Can I take the opportunity to ask you about the dimensions your using for Jane?
I have the MRJ issue with the 7mm drawing but although there is a scale, there are no leading dimensions.
Can you, or anyone else, say what the wheel centres are?
And the boiler outside dimension, I'm scaling it at 42 1/2 inches?

This drawing is the Swindon diagram drawn while the GWR was restoring No. 5 for display at Wantage Road. It is far more accurate than either of the MRJ drawings, particularly around the cylinders. The Oakwood Press Wantage Tramway book includes this and an early GA of the loco in original condition which is useful. The MRJ drawings seem to have been based on an earlier model magazine drawing (can't remember if it was MRN or one of the others) which had little relation to reality.

I'm so pleased to hear that my efforts are an inspiration to you. It makes all that sawing, drilling and soldering seem a bit more worthwhile.

I haven't posted any updates recently as I took a break from No.5 while waiting for some parts. While I was waiting I started another project, and I've been posting updates elsewhere on this forum (clue: it's about crane locomotives).

If you can post some updates on your 4mm/1ft No.5 that will motivate me to get mine finished.

Note that the boiler diameters are for the barrels... not the outside diameter over lagging and cladding.

Whilst the written dimensions for the boiler might not include the cladding I would suggest that on the drawing itself this is in reference to the dotted line "inside" the boiler. The cladding is then the difference to the solid outer line, so if you print off the drawing it should be fairly easy to scale up the boiler dimensions to include the cladding.
