Hi

Thanks for the kind comments. I wasn't sure the photo would work, as getting the C13 in reasonable focus was a problem. In the end I got Roger to hold a light over it and it came out very well.

Easily the best layout at RailEx and this photograph is superb. It tells an ordinary story that is totally convincing with not a glossy "film star" in sight! When are you out again?
Simon T

Thanks SimonT. I'd probably question the 'easily' as I thought it was a really high quality show all round, but I appreciate the sentiment. We have no further confirmed bookings as yet, though a few enquiries. That's fine, as we do not wish to go out very often. I'll post here when something is confirmed.

OI !!! Muckin' about with photos is the job of Mr Nevard - a very bad influence if ever there was one - just because of his photos of PMP's Albion Yard I've had to buy this month's Model Rail
If he does the pics for the BRM shoot of Heyside mentioned above, that'll be an issue of BRM I'll be forced to buy

Not fair!!! :headbang:

:p:D:));)

You might be safe Jordan - Andy York is doing the photoshoot. I'll be very interested to see what he makes of it - different eye and all that.

Hi

A few more pics. I like the photos that have no or little direct railway interest - it forces you to consider 'the rest of the world', and shows all too easily where scenes could be bettered.

Here Mrs. Ramsbottom is making a valiant attempt to add some colour to her domain, though I'm not sure of the legality of planting the rough ground by the wall.

P1010668a.jpg

A general view of the lane. You can see where the local urchins have forced their way through the fence when the gates are padlocked.

P1010673a.jpg

Discussing the odds on the 2.30. The Royal Mail van stands outside the disused and boarded Nissen Hut. A new lease has been granted and it will be turned into a motorcycle repair shop.

Someone's got one of those new fangled TV thingies.

Cheers

Very nice indeed Richard, I do like the planters outside the front door. As you say it adds a 'real life' element to the often left out areas. This attention to detail adds that deeper dimension and makes it so much more believable, top drawer

Yes, I think I was getting Model Rail and BRM mixed up a bit as well  .The 'mags' seem to be all much of a muchness, these days.... but an article about Heyside will be well worth looking out for, whichever the publication.

Hi

Station Platform today. Bloody stupid thing to have started with a photoshoot tomorrow morning, but it's been bugging me for years, and I have a track record of doing things at the last moment.

The platform surface I inherited was slabs well-carved from Depron. Unfortunately, it had been painted a uniform shade of brown, and it didn't fit the bill, though was suitably depressing:) Shown in the following photo.

P1010099a.JPG

The problem with stone slabs is that lots of colours are visible, so a single colour simply won't look right. So I scribbled various colours over the brown, but with little on the brush. Not dry brushing - a bit wetter than that, but various depths of colour. At no stage was I trying to obliterate the underlying colour.

On top of the brown I used light grey, and then buff, and the look can best be described as a WWII arctic camouflage scheme.

Next colour is the final medium/dark grey, and this was more dry brushed than the previous coats.

Today's work is to paint the white line on the edge (acrylics) and then to add and immediately wipe off a black wash. Hopefully it will then look like what I have in my mind's eye and we can add the station furniture etc. .... or it will be an epic fail without time to correct..

Cheers

Heyside really is coming on a treat Richard and the platform surface has responded well to your painting
I'm going to suggest that you try a dirty dark grey wash first as opposed to a black one - mixing equal parts of dark grey and brown to get a muddy, unappealing colour, then adding drops of black to darken to taste. The resultant wash could always be gone back over with a pure black one if the end result is not what you are looking for (or for extra depth), but a pure black wash to start with is more difficult to correct. I also think that the dirty grey remains after wiping off would tie in better with the colour palette visible in the photos above.
I hope all goes well for you tomorrow, it must be quite exciting :)

Thanks Steve. That makes sense - but the overall colour has to tie in with the other platform too. I'll kick it around for the next few hours. I have to go over to Tim's to pick up some weathered vehicles, first, so I have some time.

To my eyes the most recent photos of the platform surface give an impression of worn and used York stone flags and very nice too. Cookies' suggestion regarding grey / brown in preference to black gets my vote.

Well I'm knackered!

I managed to get the platform finished late last night, and was up at 6.15 this morning to complete the job, add the furniture, weather some more walls etc. etc.

I had collected a few more coaches and the weathered motor vehicles the previous evening, so trains had to be made up, vehicles placed and I thought Heyside looked really good.

I then turned to completing the weathering on the Aspinall 2-4-2, which between photos was completed, wheels cleaned and put on the front of a suburban set. I particularly wanted that and the saddle tank in the pics as L&YR representatives.

Andy York turned up at 9.30 and left at 4.45 so a pretty long tiring day - good fun though. Fortunately, Roger and Clive came to help with operating, loco changes and generally shifting stuff around.

I shall see if I can get some pics tomorrow of various bits that have been added in the last day or so.

Sounds like a long day Richard, but I'm sure it'll all be worth it and you and the Heyside team will be proud as punch  Looking forward to seeing the pictures,

Hi

I finally managed to get round to taking some photos today.

First off, the station platform finished. It needs a coat of matt varnish, but I'm pleased with the way the colours and weathering turned out. Nobody is very interested in the new fangled DMU it seems.

P1010710a.jpg

I also managed to get the L&Y 2-4-2 mostly done, even if I was weathering and using the hairdrier between shots on Thursday:) Talk about last minute.

'50, you have to be joking'

More later.
