David Andrews N Class discussion

By the way, in between battling with door frames, it sounds like my David Andrews N Class kit will be arriving this week. Could well be the last batch David is doing of these so I was pleased to get hold of one.

Any advice or tips on building a David Andrews kit from the collective?

Hi Chris,

I have built two of David's 'N' Class moguls and nearly a dozen of his kits all told, none gave any trouble in their construction and best of all, the instructions are very good as well.

Best of luck with your build and as Dan said, a build thread would be great.

kind regards

Mike

Will this range disappear when he finally retires. I would like an N but not for a couple of years or so.

I got the distinct impression that this was the final run. I'd give him a ring and have a chat if you really want one, could be the last chance.

For me it's just now a T9 that needs to be sourced from the loco stock list. The Finney7 boys should be able to sort that at some stage hopefully.

Just need to acquire the time and skill to build all the kits then...

I would concur based on the catenary structures. Somewhere where the line turns South East. Stafford area?

It's not MML or ECML as the cross rail catenary structures are wire rather than lattice or girder. Nor is it GWML as the catenary wire registration arms are of a different pattern.

Warm, very warm, in the Stafford area guess. Two levels sort of gives the game away...

South Wales ?

On a good day it is possible to see South Wales from Ilfracombe......
The station site, situated incoveniently above the town is now a factory. It is possible to walk the trackbed up past the Slade Reservoirs most of the way to Morthoe station. The 1:36 is a noticeable climb, but coming back is better!
BR really was at its worst when they ran the line down after 1963; decay and neglect permeated the whole line. The high cost of manning all the gated level crossings was not addressed, adding to the agony of the slow death. I suppose we should be grateful the line to Barnstaple survived; probably by the skin of its teeth.
The half hourly Ilfracombe to Westward Ho! bus service serves the towns and villages better, even if it takes 110 minutes for the full journey. Except of course when traffic snarls up in Barnstaple and Braunton during the summer......

Edit to add: By my calculations, there were 11 sets of manned crossing gates between Barnstaple and Ilfracombe. A legacy of building the line cheaply. Not sure about the status of the one at Shaplands Factory, as that was not a public highway.

Not sure Chris wants his topic taken over by a debate on Dr. B! Needless to say, some of the survey and accounting methods used were questionable. Some lines were closed, but should not have been. Look what has happened in the Scottish Borders. There are lines today open which really should have been closed. We nearly lost the Settle and Carlisle. In the drive to take freight off Shap, that line will become absolutely essential to the network. I believe there was a total lack of understanding of the economic and social impact the closures would have on communities. However, lines such as Taunton - Barnstaple should never have been built. That was the conclusion I came to on reading the recent 2 volume history. The whole thing was a mixed bag.
