I was thinking more of the GWR locations in it.

 GWR?

Sorry Rob, no photos of Brent but lots of Panniers, Prairies and 4-6-0 thingies.

Photo locations are those named stations on the following maps...

My initial thought was that there was quite a lot of GWR material, but with subsequent look throughs I think it's actually a more even split of photos. Some interesting shots, particularly if you have a general interest in Devon and Cornwall.

I've got a copy, too - lots of Cornish locations including the mainline around Truro and the branches as well as into Devon, Somerset and Dorset. It's probably more Southern than Western, but the quality of photography is really very good and although a lot of the subject matter is relatively common the views are not the usual ones. Well worth the money in my view.

Adam

A good summary Adam.

Michael Messenger does say it's really a collection of his favourite photos. Includes his first (post box brownie) and final steam photos taken.

And nonetheworse for that. Being Twelveheads, the design and production are spot on, too. I admit, it was the cover picture of Colyford on the Seaton branch that sold the book to me, but the content is hugely evocative. There's a wonderful picture of 4555 crossing the causeway at Laira, for example, which is both arty and full of railway context. My kind of thing.

I shall seek this one out.

With regards to proper Western engines, are there any photographs of Adams Radials?

We do like these a lot. They demonstrate how good a correctly proportioned tank engine should look.

There's really no need to tack on bits of brass and copper to improve things.

Rob.

Looks good Chris, I reckon you need another row at the ridge to look right. What are you using for ridge tiles?

Hi Peter, yes another row will be added at the ridge. I'll do that at the end when both sides of the roof are tiled.

Haven't decided on what to use for the ridge tiles yet.

Sorry Sheepbloke, no Radials in the book. Lots of other proper Southern stuff though.

@Jeremy Good - you'll notice from the above photos that both lions face forwards. Does your own research support this?

2127 entered service on 24-12-1959. The error with BR using the heraldic device reversed was apparently pointed out in late 1959. So IMO it is conceivable that Swindon was still using up existing right-facing transfers at this point.

Chris,

To be honest I hadn’t looked that closely at these until now.

The photos I can find of D.2127 are inconclusive but there are shots of D.2120 and D.2122 at Swindon Works in Oct/Nov 1959 in Colin Marsden’s The Diesel Shunter showing a rearward facing lion on the drivers side cab side. There is also a Jan 1960 photo of the other side of D.2126 also at Swindon confirming the consistent numbering style of this batch.

Hope that helps even if it makes more work.

Interesting, @Jeremy Good I've got that book and it doesn't appear to have that photo. Closest I can find is this one taken by the late Frank Hornby in Feb 1958, all of which seem to have lion facing forward:

Chris,

It's one of those irritating publications that's very different from one edition to the next. Still, it's a reasonably commercial approach as some saps like me will have more than one copy and if they have different useful photos it makes some sense...

Mine was a bargain bin purchase, bought on impulse a fair few years ago. Thought it might come in useful one day. Apparently not for my edition :))

There is a photo on the next page of D2183 as well. It is brand new at Swindon Works with wasp stripes and dated March 1962.

I’ve managed to acquire both editions as I thought it was a different book as well.
