7mm Rob Pulham's Work Bench - Back (again) to the LNER 06 (MOK 8F)

The first bit of the painting and lining is done. Done with bow compasses using the techniques in Ian Rathbone's book. I have made a start on the cab sides but that's not going quite as well as the wheels:(

I've just been sitting quietly in the corner watching this thread and trying not to disturb anyone...
Have had a good giggle at the Games Workshop paint names :) ....there's a GW near me but I don't like going in as they try to collar you to play with dubious-looking toy soldiers...

.... I digress.... what's made me comment is the lining on those wheels.... to line out a Kettle must be hard enough - to start with the wheels and get results like that is just awesome!!!:bowdown::bowdown:

Now I know why my loco's are all in BR grime! Nice work Rob.
I hope you don't mind me saying - the LH axlebox on your tank has gone skew-whiff, perhaps it just needs re-gluing before it drops off and disappears into outer space...

Not quite me thinks.... for those who read the 7mm Yahoo Group, things which "drop off" fall automatically into the Big Black Hole which was first noticed under Bob Alderman's workbench. There have been enough sightings of this phenomenum, in different parts of the country, to suggest that these "holes" are part of the Flue Network so beloved by JK and collectively provide an easy route to Platform 9 3/4 and hence the Loco Stores at Grosmont.

Come to think of it, the loco most often seen at said platform is a nice vibrant red...

Jordan, what was the colour of Soo Line Kettles?

regards, Graham

PS-Rob is not that worried if the 'box drops off... he can then paint up a "Not to Go" card and make a visit to Horbury Junction for a replacement.;)

mmm spooky eh, by an amazing coincidence (yes I know I need to get out more :D) here's a pic I took of Hogwarts Castle down Horbury Junction on it's way to Charles Roberts (well the bit that later became Procor)

Humm, neither red nor blue.... almost as bad as trying to decide on a livery for a diseasel in the post privatisation era.

Thanks Jordan,
I have to admit as to thinking the same about GW paint names but they are good paints.

Thanks Tony, the 06(8F) will be grimy black after this one - Ian Rathbone I am not:rolleyes: .
I sorted the axlebox - I hadn't noticed either on the model or the photo's but it's amazing how many did:) luckily it was just a matter of a minor twist to put it back right.

The saga of the chassis continues but gets nearer to completion.

I spent all day yesterday fitting the Ragstone brakes. I had to make some spacer plates to bring the mountings out from the sides of the too narrow frames to make the hangers fit on the ends of the brake beams.

Before fitting all the beams etc I tried the wheels in place. To my dismay they wouldn't fit in two ways
1, The wheels physically wouldn't fit between the mountings - this could be got around by filling the mountings.
2, After filling a pair of mountings to enable the wheel to fit in between them and rotate the brake shoes were at such an angle that they would never sit down on the wheels. Now I know why Christian cut the shoes from the hangers and remade the hangers on his A3.

In the interests of actually finishing this at some point rather than throwing through the window or putting it away unfinished never to see the light of day again. I decided to compromise by using the DJH shoes and hangers in conjunction with the Ragstone cross beams and my scratch build vacuum cylinders.

So here we have it.

Now I just need to make an arrangement to fasten the vacuum cylinders on and it's assembling the valve gear.

Thanks Phil,
The fact that it was a gift from my good lady is what's keeping me going when I feel despondent with it, but the end is in sight.

I can see your problem, if it is any consolation Castles have the same problem and I usually skim the wheels (tyre wear!) to get some clearance. Springing/compensation also needs to be minimal otherwise sparks fly.....

Still moving steadily forward.

I have fabricated a couple of mounting brackets for the brake cylinders and drilled and added the sandboxes. I have some fine micro-bore pipe that I will put into these when I finally assemble it as I am sure if I do it too early they will get bet or snapped off. I also took the opportunity to file and scrape a bit of the front of each brake shoe. I will put a smear of epoxy on them once I am certain that all is running OK to help prevent shorts.

I think assembly of the valve gear is next....

Well after this tour-de-force you will be well placed to do the spring gear and brake gear on the intended A4... just think, you have to get a third vacuum cylinder, another brake shaft and another couple of pull-rods into the mix.

Cheers Graham, you do know how to make a chap feel good - my head may explode with that lot.

What I will be doing is checking out the frame spacing before fastening it together, to make sure it all will fit in. So that I don't have to remake the cylinders. But in fairness I think when I get t the A4 it will have to be a Finney so I would hope that it's not an issue.
