Did something a bit different today. Arrows of indecision cut from MDF and blasted with aluminium from a can over grey primer.

Nice!

Phil how thick can your machine cut ?

Scale thickness for the name is 15mm and for the class 4.75, MDF would be fine. Don;t think 15mm is a standard thickness in MDF so 13mm would have to do and 4mm for the class name would suffice if necessary.

No idea what the font is, the drawing doesn't specify the font style but I suspect a SR aficionado will pop by and reveal all.

No problem Mick. Will you be at Sudbury Sunday? I'll be travelling back from a weekend away but I may be allowed a tea stop in Sudbury.

Not sure, les automobile est kaput, so it depends on when the bits arrive and if I can be bothered to lie underneath to fix after a :shit: day at work, and with doubt every single one will be this week as the SOLAS Gross Mass Verification deadline draws in. We'll see how the week progresses and might be able to borrow......steal ;).... wifeys for the day

Mick,
I think the thickness dimensions on the drawing refer to the width of the strokes of the letters rather than their depth. The prototype photo shows the large and small letters all protrude about the same distance from the backing board, probably in the 3 to 5mm range. So they shouldn't be a problem to laser cut.

Hi Mick,
Overseer's comments are supported by "Nameplates Of The Big Four", Frank Burridge, OPC 1975 page 76 where the large letters are given as 4" x 5/8" raised 3/16" and small letters as 1" x 3/16" raised 1/8".

I fear that the typeface is almost certainly unavailable - modern fonts are a million miles from anything the railways (ever) used, even the familiar Gill Sans has been mucked about with!

I could knock up some traditional artwork which could then be used for Cad (it has been done before) if it helps?

Pete.

It is more than likely the Southern Railway developed their own font for these nameplates and as Peter has alluded to, unavailable. Even the original p22 Johnston underground has been mucked about with and again recently to bring it into the 'computer' age.

When I was modelling BLS/SBB many years ago I had to track down Helvetica as Arial, although similar, did not look right.

To my eyes the p22 Johnston underground and LNER/BR Gill Sans fonts have lost their clarity by so-called improvements.

Y'all quite correct.

Peter, I looked again at the sheet and found the profile image, I think it shows that both the name and class name are 3/16" profile eg 4.76mm the

After a bit of a push forward this morning, the box is now pretty much finished. Just needs painting and a few details added but I'll leave that for now.

Plenty of photo's to take and the hardest bit, write the instructions!

The next pictures of this I hope will be the step by step build by my customer who has more than proved his capability for stunning scenic work.
