Next process is to apply a stoneyish base coat using my four favourite colours.
Randomly picking colours and doing a quick most of each for several repetitions. Tricky bit is trying to get roughly the same end colour on similar buildings.
I try to remember roughly how many passes of each I use. The cans are held a good 12-18" away and moved quickly. Some if the paint dries before hitting the model giving a gritty texture. Hence why other materials were masked.
I'm not overly bothered by the result at this stage as it's only the base for the later work to follow.

Hit on them by chance in hobbycraft a year or two back as they were on special offer.
The colours I bought were:
1260 Mushroom
7060 Gravel
8000 Elm
8300 Sand
The nozels are as good as Halfords. Each contains a good quantity of paint and the nozels clean up easily.

You keep your plastic in the open. Mine goes yellow and brittle in a week or so.

It's normally stashed away in the dark but those bits were the ones being used. Various thicknesses between 5 and 60 thou. Must put it away now for a bit.

Better than working on the kitchen table chap.
The whole ply top lifts off when I need to use the desk for work. Decided to have a clear up before starting the painting.

So the next step...
I've started using this stuff in the last few years. Water soluble and can be reactivated once dry with a drop of water.
The good thing about that us that mistakes are easy to correct and merging colours is straightforward. The bad thing is that you can easily overwrite something you are happy with and that fingers will lift the paint. More on this later.
I use the above colours and make dilute washes of colours and add to random stones. The washes are mixed in a palette.

If I were to an a mortar wash now all the stonework colour would be erased. To prevent that you have to apply a coat of varnish. I've got this (again a Hobbycraft sale item) with apparently will protect the colours from fading too...
It does subtly alter the colours / shade though.

It's been a while since I've done a bit of painting and I forgot something. The varnish isn't colour neutral and darkens colours. The stonework therefore looked not as intended after spraying - miles too dark.
So it was a redo.
First a cream coloured wash over everything. Then redoing the stone colours, lighter and more contrast.
Getting there (again)...
Further work to do on the above but in the meantime the colour starts to go on another wall.
And the other fascia...
Colours are overbright at the moment and will be knocked back by a grey colour wash.

Nice stone work Chris it loooks so much better with a bit of colour on it.
Trying to decide if painting the stonework is more or less tedious than making the stonework...

Yes, I've found that you have to overdo the colouring to start with and then knock it back with a grey overwash.
