I've been outside enjoying the good weather, but gt the odd hour here and there. The Thompson underframes progress, the brakeshaft between the V hangers is too weedy and I need to add a few cables etc. I'm not sure th e51 footers had visible vacuum tanks. I'm about to attach the bogie sideframes now I've worked out where they go, there are different combinations of steps, it's nice to have them as part of the casting and not to have to make them all up.




My method of springing the buffers is to mount a piece of 0.8mm N/S wire in some tube soldered to the underside of the floor. The outer ends pass through lateral hole drillen in the buffer shanks. They seem to work ok.

That's a neat solution. I guess the wire is also soldered inside the tube?

No Steve, the wire is free to move..

Ah! I see how that work now I look at it more closely. On first sight I thought the wire went in horizontally, which would just cause a rotation through the tube, like a crank, but now I see the wire is vertical in the shank so the spring action is actually the length from the tube to the shank.

Even neater than I first thought!

First inspection indicates that it will be a cracking kit!

Bloody hell Tony that's will power for you, there's probably no way I could with stand the temptation having said that my current project has ground to a halt but I can't seem to get on with anything else meaningful until I go back to it and get it finished so I kind of know how you feel. Are you able to post any prototype images of your selected locos ?

Quite a number were repaired at Swindon (and Eastleigh) in latter days so they were reasonably common on running in turns in the mid-sixties. This doesn't exactly make them 'common' on the Western, but there you are.

A lot of the repairs seem to have been casual in nature rather than full overhauls so it's a case of finding something suitable.

An early start after being unable to sleep allowed me to get the last jobs done on the Thompsons, so they are now ready for the paintshop:

Generally, that was modifying the buffer springs, relocating the dynamoes, adding the roof strips and general tidying up.




also this ex LMS full brake.


A typically rainy Welsh summer day at home on call allowed me to get stuck in on the Ivatts. Not bad, delivery Saturday and contruction beginning Sunday! I spent the evening running through the excellent instructions and examining prototype information in the Irwell book.
Here's most of whats in the box:-

Hi Dan, a short spell in hospital has delayed progress, but hopefully once I get over the anesthetic, Ivatt construction will be an important part of my recovery program! I shall post some pics later, but I have spent the time I did have spare to prepare the spring castings. The castings are pretty tidy and little cleaning up is required.
The coaches are now awaiting a decent spell of weather to be painted, and I discovered a can of jltrt maroon in the railway room. Thats now in a secure location under armed guard! Those jltrt paints sprayed beatifully, it's a shame we cant get them any more.
