Bamboo skewers are a good idea as they will not take heat away from the soldering, also larger diameter than toothpicks.

We have had bamboo skewers in the cupboard for years, seem to recall a pack of 50 came from one of the high street "Pound" shops.

If you want the genuine article Conrad have a tool pack which includes soldering probes...

That's an idea - must ransack the kitchen again for useful modelling aids!

I've been setting out the balance weights, they are made up from 2 layers and the curved outside edge needs rounding as per prototype. Now that makes for a fun evening! Not... Now to actually glue them on and add the plastic card copies I made for the inside.

So after an interlude to operate a certain LNER layout at Eurospoor at Utrecht ( not a great shot from the zoom on my tablet, but you get the idea....):-


I got back on to preparing the wheels and filled the gaps between the balance weights:-

I've been chugging away in the background cutting out and preparing four lots of valve gear parts, so this is the upper part completed. This include a working lubricator drive, driven off the rear of the expansion link. It is possible to make the reversing link work, I like that, though I'm not sure if I will or not...


This afternoon I assembled the lower part of the valve gear and to mount the return cranks I used tapped Slaters top hat bearings. These were screwed on until tight. Top dead centre was marked. After removal the return crank could be soldered on at the correct angle, so that it would be positioned in the right place when tightened up. This leaves the 4 bolt fitting on the outside unblemished. Simples!

If you've seen the way the layout's owner - another Cliff, funnily enough - packs rolling stock at the end of a show you'd perhaps understand how this may occur.

Construction has got a little out of synch, with 43155 having most of the motion finished, and brake gear and sanding mechanism well in hand on 43156.

I have done something different with this kit, for items that are pinned, such as the brake shoes and the hangers themselves, 0.8mm brass wire is force fitted into the fittings with a 0.85 clearance hole for bits that might need to move. Lets see how it goes with this and if any bits drop off. Here is the current situation:-

There are a lot of parts in the tender, the axleboxes consist of 8 parts each! So they do take a little while to cut out and prepare. But everything fits nicely all the castings are very clean with little cleaning up required.:-

Whoa...that's brilliant stuff.

I do like those axleboxes: the castings are probably FAR easier to master, and the results look less "solid".

Is the tender suspended at all?

I am so tempted by an MOK kit, sensible head is saying 14xx/48xx or the 54xx/64xx. More adventurous head is saying Ivatt 2-6-0 or even 8f.

I am tempted ask Mrs SteadyRed for an MOK kit rather than the JLTRT Derby type 2.

Also has the added benefit that we don't live far from Dave Sharp, so Mrs could collect is she wanted ;-)

Jeff - the tender has a pair of equalising beams for the leading axles, similar to the loco.

Dave - the 8F is an easier build than the Ivatt as there are far less exposed workings, so it is a marginally quicker build. I've no experience of the GW types, but I am sure they are just as good. Either way the kits are a most enjoyable build.

A Merry Christmas and a great modelling 2014 to all the Western Thunderers!

A busy December has prevented me from posting for a while and I've only had the odd hour here and there to work on the Ivatt tenders. Christmas day morning is always a good time to escape to the study once the domestic duties are fulfilled and more skilled members of the family prepare lunch.

The tenders are well designed with an inner structure, which supports the outer skin. Again everything fits.


I'm now on to adding the fittings and about to finish off the tender front.
